A little bit about being a Babe and being a Mom

Writing an essay and sandwich making 101, that's what we are up to this evening. Even if you work and live in a sex positive/sexually explicit world like I do; much of your time, if you're lucky, is family time. Cooking, eating, homework, travel from here to there, cleaning, etc. not talking about sex or being sexual. As busy parents, sometimes we even have to schedule that stuff in or arrange a babysitter just so we can have some private adult time.

Part of being a good parent is knowing your priorities. Knowing when to choose your battles and when to hold your ground. Kids are just little people. I try to remain open to my daughter's questions. I don't try to completely censor every aspect of my 'adult' life from her, but there is no need to put it in her face either. I am lucky to have a remarkable daughter who has taught me almost as much in ten years as I have taught her. When it comes to the complicated stuff she knows that any question she has for me I will give her a straight answer. I know to go slow and keep her comfort level in mind. One of the best anecdotes that I can tell you I learned after I started working at Babeland, it goes like this (a coworker's interaction with her young daughter):

Kid: 'Mom! What's this ...?' (kid is pointing at or asking about something sex related)

Parent: 'Well, do you really wanna know?'

K: 'Yes!' (We are all so curious aren't we?)

P: 'it has to do with sex...'

K: 'oh, ewe'

P: 'do you still wanna know?'

K: 'no that's OK' ...

I proceeded to try this with my daughter. I found that when she wants to know she'll say 'Yes' and the conversation will continue. There is a lot to learn in life and I hope to continue to learn as long as I'm here. Some of the blessing of having a child is having someone to both guide on their journey and learn with on the way. Family is key in this world whether you are born with them or find them during your time here.

I look forward to contributing to a blog about moms that are also Babes and proud of it, because I am definitely one!

new music... went out last night to the Milk Bar in SF... oh my $10 to listen to the dj play a bunch of played out shite and not even play more than a small portion of each song... uggggggg... please play something worth listening to, PLEASE!!!

well, that said, i am planning to head back next friday to see Raashan Ahmad and MC Zion... i anticipate the music will be much more to my liking and dancing will ensue... see you there ;)

Khary told me we had the same taste in music! Now, i am just listening to what he is playing on his page and I can't complain, DOOM, RJD2, Outcast... But my poor baby doesn't have Dilla's 'Ruff Draft' yet! We need to change that!

the title link is to inform, it was my homework this week for my music business classes. check it out, courtney love is a pretty good writer and it is very informative about how the music industry has worked/worked over it's artists.

things are happening all the time... since my last post i thought i lost, and then recovered, all my music (and other data) on my computer... the music was the least backed up... being that there is so much of it... but i learned, and now that i am back in business i am busy with online music business classes at berklee and downloading some new/old music that i didn't have my hands on yet:

and i listen to one of the few decent radio stations here in tucson, 106.3/104.9. they were playing bill for frey and they were playing him for me the other day.

Ups and downs, smiles and frowns:)
Well, today I received a couple of lovely things in the mail.
Finally, I was motivated by a recommendation by a mutual Tom Robbins fan to make a purchase of a new book, and well I can't buy just a book, so I finally picked up one of the cds on my wish list.

here's what came in the mail today:

The Gift - Poems by Hafiz (this was recommended to me by Raashan Ahmad, gracias papi!)
DJ Spooky Presents In Fine Style

(also:my loan check for my music business classes! oh yes, I am momentarily not poor, now to pay it back;)
a modem that I need to send back, no wireless=no good!)

I am so happy with my new cd! The monkey and I were dancing around the house, anything that makes her shake her booty, is a worthy purchase! If you know me at all you should know that my true heart is reggae music. This 2 disk set has all kinds of loveliness on it. It will be in high rotation for a while! Much respect to Paul "DJ Spooky" Miller, this is just what a lonely girl needed. Oh, the horns I will always love them. Check out this double cd if you can, it is worth every penny.

I will leave you with a poem from my new book by Hafiz. Quite deep, although it is a translation (by Daniel Ladinsky), that must be so hard to translate poetry, that is an amazing skill.

Just ran across this story in oddly enough from Reuters News. Well, these 10 foot trees in Afghanistan are so full of water the Canadian troops can't burn 'um with anything, and when they do, there are 'some ill effects', hum. Maybe try a different method, vaporizor?

Anyway, i am watching the end of V right now, i fell asleep on it last night, and then i will watch 'what the bleep do we know.' Long overdue, i have been told. I'll let you know what's up. (yup, i am stayin' in tonight.)

So, i have been seeing a lot of commentary about this campaign. i peeped the shot of heidi and seal the other day. and i am sorry, but they are f-in hot! People have been dogging on these pictures: i am european ..and i'm martian including one of kate moss painted black and gwyneth paltrow in war paint.

(*speaking of kate moss: she did some nice but weird pictures in the D for W magazine, kinda interesting. don't ask me why the coked out chicks are driving down woodward...)

I titled this post 'i am human' out of nostalgia: when i was in high school i read Tom Robbins 'Another Roadside Attraction' I wanted to be Amanda, with her magic and her freedom and her mushrooms and butterflies. I will always remember what she said: "Style is Everything!" and when the fed told her he was "proud to be an american." she replied, "i am a human animal and prepared to accept the consequences"

I am proud and humbled to be human and african and european, and american if you will give me the honor. really just a michigan girl in the desert.
